Key to Parts of Speech:

  • n. = noun - a person, place, thing, or idea
  • ; ex. "Joe"

  • v. = verb - an action
  • ; ex. "run"

  • adj. = adjectective - a word that describes a noun
  • ; ex. "pretty"

  • adv. = adverb - a word that describes a verb
  • ; ex. "quickly"

  • interj. = interjection - an exclamation or phrase; "Yikes!"

Key to Pronunciation:

  • A letter that is capitilazied, like U in "man-U-ul", represents a long vowel sound.  At the same time, y is used to exaggerate the sound of a or i, as in "aytee" is 80 and "tiyt" is tight, and ee represents a long e, as in "mes-ee" is messy.  I just used what seemed to be more appropriate considering context.

  •
  • The way I use oo is to make it stand for the sound of the u in dude ("dood").  Since this oo is the symbol for this kind of u sound, I made the symbol for the oo in foot a u, so the pronounciation would look like "fut."  I know it seems backwards to do it this way, but if you think about the phonetics then it actually makes sense.  "Welcome to the English language."

  •
  • A syllable is "a unit of spoken language consisting of a single uninterrupted sound forming a word, such as wit, or part of a word, such as per- in person."(1)  I have tried to use dashes ("-") to seperate these syllables.  I know I may have missed some words so if you find some that should be fixed, let me know.

  •
  • Everything else is pretty simple and self explanitory.  If you do need assistance, remember you can contact me with any questions or concerns.  I started this to be used as a glossary for Andrew's Skating Lessons, but I want this to be the ultimate Definitive Online Skating Dictionary that I envision it as.
